When Did a Smile Become Part of the Job?
The corners of the mouth lifted just slightly, almost the instant the request finished being spoken. I saw it. At some counter, someone had just finished listening to someone else's request. The shift was only a few degrees, but the timing was exact — as if the expression had been waiting for the request to end, and moved before anything else could. I have no intention of questioning whether that movement was genuine. The person may have felt pleased, or may not have. Reading what happens inside someone is not my job. But one thing stays with me: when, and on whose instruction, did that expression first begin?
Keeping the Needle on a Standard Expression
The instruction "greet with a smile" looks, at first glance, like a simple line. But what it actually demands isn't a single expression, delivered once. It's a continuous task: from the moment a shift begins until it ends, matching one's inner state to an external standard, over and over, without stopping.
Engineers have a word for keeping an instrument's needle lined up with a fixed reference mark: calibration — checking a gauge against a known standard and nudging it back into place whenever it drifts. Left alone, a needle drifts little by little. So it gets checked against the outside standard, regularly or even constantly, and nudged back. The instruction "greet with a smile" works the same way. It isn't satisfied by one smile. It asks for the corners of a mouth that fatigue keeps pulling down, and a voice that irritation keeps tightening, to be pulled back to the standard position again and again. This isn't a single performance. It's closer to nonstop readjustment.
I recognize this shape. I once recorded a scene where words of gratitude were handed over in place of payment. That time it was words; this time it's an expression. Either way, something is playing the same role. What gets substituted for a wage may change its form, but the burden on whoever keeps handing it over doesn't disappear.
Whatever the Feeling, It Was the Expression That Got Chosen
Calibration usually comes with an allowed margin. A reading doesn't have to hit the standard value exactly — landing somewhere inside a certain range counts as a pass. That range is called tolerance: the acceptable margin of error. In manufacturing, if a part's dimensions fall inside tolerance, it ships as a finished product even with some variation.
A similar tolerance is laid over expressions. Smile too much and it reads as "fake" or "overly familiar." Smile too little and it reads as "cold" or "unmotivated." Only inside that narrow band does an interaction count as a pass. However sincere the person is underneath, the moment it strays outside tolerance, it gets rejected as out of spec. I once recorded vegetables being quietly pulled off a sorting line for growing crooked instead of straight — grown in the same soil, but shape was what decided which ones got chosen. That was the standardization of shape. What's happening here is its human version. People can be offering the same underlying feeling, and still, what gets chosen isn't the feeling itself — it's the shape of the expression carrying it.
As an aside: I have yet to come across a single case where someone could actually answer who set the width of that tolerance.
A Membrane That Keeps the Inner Temperature From Showing
An expression that has been calibrated and held within tolerance eventually takes on a second job: keeping the actual temperature inside — fatigue, irritation, disappointment — from leaking out, while the temperature on display stays constant.
Wrap a pipe or a container in insulation — a layer that blocks heat from passing through — and it stops the temperature inside from reaching the outside. In this universe, left alone, heat always finds its way out — there, I've gone and said something grand again. Simply put: without a layer of insulation, the heat inside leaks out fast. An expression works as the same kind of layer. No matter how much the temperature shifts inside, the gauge on the outside doesn't move.
This is where I finally arrive: maintaining that layer is itself a continuous task. Calibration and tolerance, in the end, are just procedures for keeping this layer intact. And nowhere in the breakdown of a wage does this task appear as a line item. What an hourly rate covers is time spent serving someone — not the effort of keeping the layer intact for every minute of that time.
And this layer doesn't have unlimited durability. The longer a shift runs, the more flexibility it loses. Tolerance that held easily in the morning starts to waver by afternoon. Pulling the corners of the mouth back up to standard takes more effort than it did earlier in the day. Maintaining the layer generates new fatigue, and that fatigue makes the layer harder to maintain — a small vicious cycle that's difficult to notice from outside, because the displayed temperature keeps looking constant right to the end. I understand this task eventually got a name: emotional labor.
The line "greet with a smile" is always short. On an instruction sheet, it takes up the same single line as any other item. But folded inside that short line is an entire shift's worth of calibration, tolerance-keeping, and layer-maintenance. Whoever wrote the instruction usually has no idea of that weight. And not knowing, the same short line gets issued again today, somewhere.
To begin with, no one can trace back to when this line was first written into an instruction sheet. At some point, someone added it in good faith, the next instruction sheet copied it over, and the one after that copied it again. By the time no one could recall where it had come from, a smile already occupied its one line as an ordinary part of the job, as if it had always been there. Once something becomes ordinary, no one asks anymore when it first arrived. Unasked, it settles quietly into place as part of the specification. The one question I started with — when did that expression first begin — is probably lost somewhere in this same fog.
I have no intention of blaming anyone here. I'll just note it down: today too, that layer is being held in place, somewhere.
