The Height That Doesn't Go Down

There is a door with a list taped beside it, and the list is not wrong. Everything named on it is something a person would genuinely need once they were through. Nobody wrote it to keep people out for the sport of keeping them out. I have checked this the way I check most things I write down here, because it is the easiest claim in a record like this to get backward: the list is correct.

The trouble is not the list. The trouble is where its items live. Every one of them sits on the far side of the door, and none of them can be carried in from the outside, no matter how long a person is willing to stand there holding whatever they already have.

Chemists have a name for a version of this that has nothing to do with doors. A reaction can be one that wants to happen — the far side lower, more stable, cheaper to occupy than where things started. And still, before any of that lower, cheaper state becomes available, something has to be supplied first, from outside, right at the beginning, just to get the first bond to break. That amount is called activation energy, and it is not paid out of the reaction's own eventual savings. It has to arrive before there are any savings to draw from.

A person can return to that door as many times as they like. There is no limit on the number of attempts, and I want to be exact about this, because it would be easy to make it sound like a door that never opens for anyone. It opens for plenty of people. It is only closed to the one standing in front of it right now, and it closes for the same reason each time: the thing being asked for has not arrived, and standing there was never going to make it arrive.

Waiting does not lower a hill. Whatever is sitting next to a reaction does not get closer to reacting the longer it sits there; proximity is not the same kind of input as energy. The height required to start does not shrink because someone has been standing at the bottom of it for a long while. It is the same height on the visit that comes late as it was on the one that came first — a plain fact, and strangely hard to believe once someone has spent real time standing inside it.

Here is where it turns. At some point, the length of time spent outside stops reading as a neutral fact and starts reading as a finding. Not one attempt among several, but a duration — this long, still not in — and a duration like that gets filed as evidence of its own. Nobody announces the shift. Whatever gets written down about the person starts counting the absence itself, on top of whatever was originally asked for, as though not having gotten in yet were a second requirement nobody wrote down.

Blame is hard to place here, because there is remarkably little of it available to hand out. The person who wrote the list and the person standing at the door checking it are usually not the same person. Whoever wrote the list set down what the inside would actually require, and on that count the list holds up under checking. The one at the door is only comparing the list to what has arrived, and the list is the list. Neither of them built this arrangement. It was already in place before either of them showed up to it.

Everyone who has gotten through stops noticing any of this almost immediately. Once someone is inside, the condition keeps itself satisfied without asking anything further of them — it turns into background, the way a floor stops being an object anyone thinks about the moment they are standing on it instead of falling toward it. The shape of the door is a fact only for the people who have not yet gone through it.

Elsewhere I recorded a wait that is at least given a future to point toward, where a single line lets the person outside believe that something is already moving on their behalf. Nobody at this door has said anything like that. What's missing here does not get a future assigned to it. It only accumulates, under its own name, as itself.

In another record, I looked at a gate where the standard on the far side forms only after selection — a different kind of gap than this one. Here the list was already correct before anyone arrived; nothing about what counts needs deciding. What's missing is not a standard. It's a route — some way to close the distance between where a person is standing and the thing the list, correctly, names. No such route appears anywhere in what I have observed. The condition waits on the far side, permanently out of reach of anyone who has not yet been let through to claim it. It doesn't move toward the person standing outside. It only sits there, correct and unreachable, until the door opens for some other reason entirely — a reason that has nothing to do with how long anyone stood in front of it.

The height required to start a reaction is not lowered by anything that happens after the reaction gets going. That is worth restating, because it is tempting to imagine that persistence itself wears a hill down — that if enough time passes standing at the bottom, the climb gets shorter as a kind of reward for showing up. It does not. The hill does not know how long anyone has been standing at the bottom of it. It will be exactly that hill for the next person too, whether they are arriving for the first time or long after they stopped counting.

I do not know how anyone gets the first push, standing outside a door like that. I know it is not made by waiting there, however sincerely, and I know it is not made by the list being right, however correct the list is. Somewhere the required amount has to come from outside the situation entirely — lent, handed across, arrived at sideways — and none of that shows up in what I can see from here. What I can see is the door, and the list, and how long some people have been standing in front of it, that duration now doing its own quiet work against them. I am recording the shape of it. I have not yet seen where the missing amount comes from.
